Catalogs for the Honda GX160K1 Series General Purpose Engines
About
type numbers:
These are the letters and numbers after the model designation, for example
the QXE in GX160K1 QXE. These give information about the features of the
engine. The first letter usually refers to the PTO type:
Q or D = Standard PTO (US)
V = Tapered
P or T = Threaded
E = Generator Engine
H = 6:1 Gear Reduction
L = 2:1 Gear Reduction
R = 2:1 Gear Reduction w/clutch
That's simple enough but, as you may know, Honda doesn't usually make
things simple. The meanings of subsequent letters and numbers are not
always constant through Honda's entire engine line. They indicate air
cleaner type, carburetor type, throttle type, etc. The best way to tell
which one you have is to look on the side of the block. If you're lucky,
there'll be a type indication just above the serial number:
If the number
isn't here, there may be no way to tell exactly which type you've got
without a very extensive examination of the features of your engine.
One More Thing: Begeinning with serial number GC02-8670001, Honda
made some minor changes to the design of the GX160K1 engine. For engine
types made for several years, the /A designates (on paper, anyway) which
ones have the newer design. The /A will not be indicated on the side
of the block. The only way to tell is by looking at the serial number.
