Stihl Replacement Chains

If you haven't already, please read our ordering information.

Unless you've got a brand of saw we're very familiar with, a model number and bar length really do not mean much when it comes to replacing a chain. Chains, bars, and sprockets can easily be replaced by the distributor, dealer, or the owner. The size of chain when the saw left the factory may not be the size of chain on your saw now.

In addition, the same model saw may have different size chains factory installed during different production periods, or even during the same production period. The most accurate method for determining which replacment chain you need is to look at your old chain.

There are three basic measurements needed. The first is the pitch, or the distance between rivets on the chain. This measurement determines whether the chain will fit your sprocket. Most consumer saws use a type of 3/8" pitch chain called "low profile". Also common are regular 3/8" pitch chain and 0.325 pitch chain. Less common are 1/4" pitch and 0.404" pitch.

The second measurement needed is the gauge. This is the width of the drive lugs. This measurement makes sure the chain will fit inside the groove on your bar. The most common gauge is 0.050". Some consumer saws use 0.043" and most professional saws use 0.063".

Once you know the pitch and gauge, you know which chain(s) will fit your saw. All you need to do now is figure out the length. The most reliable way to do this is to count the number of drive lugs in your old chain.
